1. Barry Brook, a leading australian academic, predicts that global demand for mined uranium will rise
at least fourfold over the next 30 years, driven by rising electricity demand and scaling back on fossil fuel dependence.

Thermal reactors currently contributed about 380 GW (gigawatts) of global electricity
supplies, or 15% of total electricity production, which was due to grow by at least four times to about 1.5 TW (terawatts) by 2040. In line with this growth scenario, global ura-
nium consumption would rise from 69 000 tons/year
at present to about 285 000 t/y by 2040. China’s electricity production, a key driver of Australia’s uranium industry, was scheduled to reach between 2 TW and 3 TW by 2050, with global needs in the region of 10 TW.

The world's second biggest economy, which wants to double its provision for its fuel consumption, will make an announcement in June on whether it indends to press ahead with the plants, the Nikkei business daily said.

Japan has few energy resources and relies on nuclear power from 53 plants for nearly one third of its domestic electricity needs.

The government is eager to boost its energy self-sufficiency ratio, which stands at 18 percent at home and at 38 percent with government and corporate interests overseas taken into account, the report said.

The government is looking to build eight nuclear plants by 2020 and at least six more by 2030 to double the figure to 70 percent. It will provide funding to companies looking to work on nuclear power projects

First Google, Now GoDaddy - China Tech Attack?

Just a few days ago, Google made good (to the surprise of many) on an announcement that they were 'shutting down China'.

Many were skeptical that the search giant would actually turn off one of the fastest growing markets in the world. Others cheered, as the move, spearheaded by none other than Google's co-founder Sergey Brin, became reality.

Google's reasoning was censorship of the search engine's results but also came just a few weeks after some significant hacking of US companies (including Google) from what many believe came directly from Google's China headquarters in Beijing.

In the US, members of Congress applauded the move. In China, reaction was mixed with some taking the Google 'side' and wanting an open Internet, while others were angry that the US-based company would target their country.

Google redirected traffic earlier this week from Google.cn to Google.hk (Hong Kong) with mixed results, as the 'mainland' began blocking various Google services.

Hong Kong was 'given back' to China by the UK in the 1990's and is a Chinese territory but still enjoys a thriving economy and much more open relations and trade with other countries. It was only until about a decade later that portions of mainland China began their direct and aggressive trade programs with the 'outside world'.

In a surprise announcement yesterday, GoDaddy, the largest domain registrar in the world, also said they're pulling out and stopping the registration of .cn domain names. The reason given was a new set of regulations by the Chinese government for registering those domains.

The question now becomes whose next? Will it work?

Will China open up? More importantly ..... Will they float their currency making free trade fair trade?

Regardless, this chapter had to be one of the most fascinating in Internet history.

Looking at an expected range of exchange rates and GDP growth estimates:
33.5 trillion * 1.095 growth / 1.35 billion @ 6.7 exchange rate
would be $4055 per capita

This is higher than the $3856 cutoff and has some room for inflation adjustment of the 2008 number.

33.5 trillion * 1.1 growth / 1.35 billion @6.6 exchange rate would be $4135 per capita

33.5 trillion * 1.105 growth / 1.35 billion @6.5 exchange rate would be $4219 per capita

There is a 2010 business and population census in China. This could lead to an adjustment in estimated population and a new estimate of GDP.

China should become a high income country in 2016-2017 assuming 9% annual GDP growth and the yuan appreciating to about 3.5 yuan to the US dollar. It is also assumed that China's population will peak in 2026 at about 1.4 billion people (US Census Bureau estimate)

China Per Capita GDP Estimates
2010 $4150
2011 $4870
2012 $5760
2013 $6860
2014 $8070
2015 $10800
2016 $12800 - Exceeds the $11906 cutoff for World Bank High Income
2017 $15100 - Probably exceeds an inflation adjusted cutoff
2018 $17300
2019 $18800
2020 $20300
China’s population is projected to peak at slightly less than 1.4 billion in 2026, both earlier and at a lower level than previously projected. Meanwhile, India’s population is projected to surpass China’s population in 2025, according to new data being released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Population growth in China, the world’s most populous country, is slowing and currently stands at 0.5 percent annually. China surpassed the 1.2 billion population mark in 1994 and reached 1.3 billion in 2006.

According to the latest revisions, India is projected to become the world’s most populous country in 2025. The population growth rate in India currently is about 1.4 percent, nearly three times that of China. The difference in the growth rate between the two countries is explained by fertility. India’s total fertility rate — the number of births a woman is expected to have in her lifetime — is currently estimated at 2.7 and projected to decline slowly, and that is driving population growth in the country.

One of the consequences to China’s declining fertility rate is that the number of new entrants to China’s labor force may be near its peak. The population ages 20-24 is projected to peak at 124 million in 2010. This peak is earlier than in India, which is projected to reach 116 million in 2024.

Despite a shrinking younger population, China’s labor force may continue to grow for several years since the population ages 20 to 59 (prime working ages) is not expected to peak until 2016 at 831 million, an increase of 24 million from the current estimated level.

China and India together account for 37 percent of the world’s population

The first re-use of nuclear fuel in a Candu reactor has started at Qinshan nuclear power plant in China.

Over the next six months, another 24 of the 'natural uranium equivalent' (NUE) bundles will be used in two of the reactor's fuel channels. If successful over a one-year trial, this practice could help China get more energy from its imported uranium and reduce stocks of highly-radioactive used nuclear fuel at the same time.

To make this first batch of NUE fuel, Qinshan managers collaborated with AECL, the Nuclear Power Institute of China and China North Nuclear Fuel Corporation. Fuel that had previously been used was processed to recover unspent uranium and this was mixed with some depleted uranium to achieve a mix with the same overall characteristics as natural uranium. Technical challenges in doing this included the highly-radioactive nature of the used fuel and achieving the right blend of depleted uranium and the recovered stocks still enriched up to around 1.6%.

A report late in 2009 suggested that China should build another two Candu reactors as part of a used fuel managment strategy.

A program in South Korea has pursued similar goals for some time. Dupic (Direct Use of PWR fuel in Candu) envisages the used fuel pellets from PWR fuel being broken up, heated to drive off radioactive fission products and then reformed for use in Candu fuel. Using Candu reactors in a similar way is also under investigation in Ukraine.

Canada Atomic Energy of Canada needs this to work for any meaningful future for its reactors and the company. The only other business for the makers of CANDU would be supporting the legacy fleet of reactors until they are decommissioned. This would provide them with a unique capability and niche service for extending uranium supplies. This would last until there were other better ways to extend uranium with better deep burn reactors.

Michael Pettis explains how a chinsese currency revaluation would play out.

Michael Pettis is a professor at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, where he specializes in Chinese financial markets, and a Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

* A revaluation shifts wealth from the Chinese government and the manufacturing sectors (and some wealthy Chinese) to Chinese households — which, by the way, is pretty much what is meant by “rebalancing” in the Chinese context.

* There are many other ways besides revaluation to shift income this way. The PBoC can raise deposit rates, wages can rise faster than productivity, companies can be privatized by giving away shares to the public, and so on. They all have the same effect. They shift resources to households and away from producers, infrastructure investment, and real estate developers. This allows household income to grow relative to national income, which ultimately increases the consumption share of GDP.

* rebalancing cannot happen too quickly without risking throwing the economy into a tailspin.

* If we abstract for a moment, and call all trade-deficit countries the United States, and all trade-surplus countries China, there are broadly speaking two ways the system can adjust. The rebalancing in China will force an equivalent rebalancing in the US. As the price of Chinese goods rise, the net impact will be to transfer resources from US consumers, who have to pay more for their imports, to US producers (US producers become more globally competitive).

* There are several countries with structurally low consumption and high production — Germany, Japan and China being the most important (and I leave out the OPEC countries for obvious reasons)

* if we want to resolve the global imbalances in an optimal way that maximizes global growth and equity, we would need all the major problem countries to work out a program, perhaps over 8 to 10 years, in which China, Japan and Germany take concrete measures to shift subsidies away from manufacturers and return the income to households, and the US, the UK and other deficit countries shift income from households to investment.

Of course the cynic in me says getting a global solution will prove impossible. Each country that benefits in the short term from stonewalling on any aspect of the complex adjustment process will do so. So I guess that just leaves trade war.

Bloomberg reports - China has approved the construction of 28 more nuclear power reactors under a revised target for 2020 to meet rising demand for clean energy and accelerate development of the industry.

Each of the one-gigawatt reactors will cost as much as 14 billion yuan ($2.1 billion), Mu Zhanying, general manager of the state-run China Nuclear Engineering Group, said in an interview in Beijing today. Under the original plan announced in 2005, China was to spend 400 billion yuan to add 40 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2020 to help reduce reliance on more polluting coal and oil. The capacity will exceed 70 gigawatts by then under the revised plan, Wang Binghua, chairman of the State Nuclear Power Technology Corp. It would take 50 months to build one reactor, according to Mu.

SEO for Baidu

Now that Google is pulling its search and advertising from China, and its over 1.3 billion people, there's only one significant platform remaining available for Web dominance and that's Baidu. If you've considered getting into China (as much as you can get into it) then we've put together a quick guide to SEO (search engine optimization) for your review.

Keyword Research
Any sophisticated search advertising or search engine optimization campaign is going to start with an in-depth round of keyword research. While it is probably best to hire a vendor/company with both translation and interpretation experience, there are fortunately some free online keyword research tools that you will be able to bootstrap with and use for Chinese translation.

Baidu's PPC management platform Search Marketing Pro (also known as Phoenix Nest) should be your first step in conducting Chinese keyword research. Baidu's platform is similar to others you are likely familiar with, offering daily budget features, keyword (and negative) keyword matching, ad rotation, geo-targeting, day parting and of course a keyword suggestion tool and bid estimator. The keyword tool from Baidu offers related keyword suggestions based on the core keywords you submit and provides them for download in a spreadsheet.

You may be saying to yourself, "Hey, what about Alibaba?" and you'd be wise to do so. Alibaba is a leading trade portal and one of our secondary focus points as it should be yours. Its keyword suggestion tool (Alibaba Wangxiaobao) is particularly useful for those in wholesale and trade businesses as Alibaba users tend to buy in bulk.

Editors Note: Install East Asian Language Files on Your Computer
I quickly learned that most of those in the English-speaking world, myself included, are not able to view Chinese characters without modifying our systems. The solution for Windows users is to install supplemental language support from your control panel. Doing so will enable you to see Chinese, Japanese and Korean language files, but at a cost of 230MB of disk space. Should you choose the install, open Regional and Language Options, click Start, click Control Panel, click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, and then click Regional and Language Options.

SEO Techniques
Unlike the complexity of search engine optimization for Google, Baidu offers a much more accessible challenge. Some of the core differences are that Baidu places more emphasis on meta information such as titles, descriptions and keywords. Alt tags are also weighted heavily, but the quantity of links is the key difference, as Google focuses more on the quality. Other techniques, including the use of heading tags and internal/external anchor text, should also be an area of focus.

If you just can’t seem to get your site added by the baidubot, you are able to submit directly using the Baidu Site Submit. For those interested in speeding up the process even more and getting some universal content into the index too, then it will be the Baidu Search Open Platform that will warrant your attention. Baidu’s open platform accepts XML data submission that may appear among the organic search results. The open platform requires developers/webmasters sign up and verify ownership (through file upload or meta tag verification) of the site, and submit a personal identity document.

One quick note on content and usability: Due to some speed and performance issues of the Baidu crawler, it has been suggested that writing in the reverse pyramid style (i.e. most important information at the top, preferably with a strong call to action) will result in higher positions, as often one the first few hundred kilobytes are indexed. This means you should keep design elements and content separate through CSS.

Chinese Domains, Hosting & Web Design
There are several important considerations when it comes to designing a website for Chinese users. In a perfect world you would have a Chinese domain extension as well as a Chinese hosting provider. Unless you’ve got some internal connections in China, however, it is best to start your search for hosting in Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore.

Finally, you'll want to make sure your pages have the appropriate content type indicated (see an example below) and avoid the use of robots.txt, focusing instead on modifying the .htaccess file instead.

This is far from a comprehensive guide for search engine optimization for China. What it does provide is quick but key insight into what you’ll need to consider if one of your objectives is total Chinese domination. Keep it light (no porn or gambling) and informational and you’ll make your mark in the land of the rising sun.

"China is adjusting its mid- and long-term nuclear plan and judging by current work preparations, nuclear capacity by a conservative standard will reach 70-80 GW by 2020," Huang Li, deputy head of the National Energy Administration's energy saving and equipment department

Huang Li said the government is drafting a plan to increase hydropower capacity to 270 GW by 2020. The goal would be 37 percent higher than the current 197 GW.

Those statements are roughly in line with rumored energy generation targets for China.

In 2006/7 the projection was that China would have about 35% power from non-fossil fuel sources in 2020. 270GW Hydro, 40GW nuclear, 123GW from renewable if targets are reached

In 2009, the rumored energy targets for China for 2020 were 300 GW Hydro, 75GW nuclear, 150GW from renewable if targets are reached. 46% of power would be from non-coal sources if natural gas usage is increased as projected.

The government's official survey data show the country could theoretically generate 694 GW from hydro sources, of which about 541 GW is technically feasible and 401 GW is economically feasible.

China's power use reached 272.1 billion kWh in February, up 10.54% year on year, according to the latest statistics released by the National Energy Administration.

Large-scale construction of China's modernized electricity network or smart grid is slated to begin in 2011, according to the nation's power grid operator.

The timeline for the comprehensive system, designed to increase the country's power transmission capabilities, will run from 2011 to 2015.

EU Observer - China is exploring the possibility of extending its high-speed train network as far as Europe, potentially cutting rail travel time between London and Beijing to as little as two days. Officials hope to see the project completed over the next ten years, enabling passengers to travel the roughly 8,000 kilometre journey at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour. China is currently in the middle of a vast railway expansion project that aims to build nearly 30,500 kilometres of new railways in the next five years, connecting all its major cities with high-speed lines. China's internal high speed rail plans were reported here along with a comparison of the US high speed rail plans
NY Times reports China will spend $88 billion constructing intercity rail lines, the highest priority in the plan. It spent $44 billion last year and just $12 billion as recently as 2004.

The government has nearly finished the construction of a high-speed rail route from Beijing to Shanghai at a cost of $23.5 billion — almost equal to the price of the entire Three Gorges hydroelectric dam project on the Yangtze River. The authorities recently disclosed that they had 110,000 workers laboring to finish the route as quickly as possible.

This is a map of low speed train routes, but the proposed high speed rail lines would be going over roughly similar routes

Two lines to Europe are reportedly being considered under the proposals, one passing through India, Pakistan, and the Middle East, while a second would head to Germany via Russia. Exact routes are currently undecided however. A third line would extend south from China to connect Vietnam, Thailand, Burma and Malaysia.

Financing the project appears to be the main question, with China offering to bankroll the Burmese line in exchange for the country's rich reserves of lithium, a metal used in batteries.

"We will use government money and bank loans, but the railways may also raise financing from the private sector and also from the host countries," said Mr Wang, indicating the new lines would also be used to carry freight.

European experts say the current low maritime transport costs make it harder to justify an EU-China rail line on commercial grounds however.

Times Online UK: Continental Europe now has 3,600 miles of high-speed line in operation, with a further 2,000 under construction. China will have 6,000 miles open by 2012.

NY Times: China is investing $292.9 billion (2 trillion RMB) in a nationwide high-speed, energy efficient rail network.

China accelerated its high-speed-rail development plan last year in the wake of the global financial crisis, saying it would increase the passenger network by a third to 16,000 kilometers, or about 10,000 miles, by 2020. The centerpiece of the service is a 1,318-kilometer line with 16 kilometers of tunnels that will cut the trip between Beijing and Shanghai to five hours from 10. The Beijing / Shanghai high speed line is set to open 2012.

The Chinese Railway Ministry says that the new system makes economic sense: A two-track bullet train can transport 160 million people a year, compared with 80 million for a four-lane highway.
The World Bank has raised its economic growth forecast for China from 8.7 percent to 9.5 percent, citing a boost in exports, strong growth in real estate and robust domestic spending.

The growth in 2010 would rely less on government stimulus spending, the main force driving the 8.7 percent growth in 2009. China would continue to bolster its economy through government-led investment, but on a much smaller scale, the report said.

Thanks to an impressive recovery early this year and a pickup in the global economy, exports are likely to grow for the whole year and contribute to the economic growth. However, uncertainties remain for later this year.

Another major boost for China's economy this year comes from the real estate sector, which is likely to add significantly more to growth than in 2009 as it begins to rebound.

Inflation will reach 3.5‐4 percent on average in 2010, largely due to rising food prices, but prices are not likely to continue to increase as rapidly as they did at the end of 2009 because the factors behind food price increases are not likely to persist.

Property prices may well continue to rise significantly this year, particularly in the first half.

The World Bank predicted a sluggish recovery in 2010-11 for rich countries. Growth in developed countries will be 1.8 percent in 2010, and edge up to 2.3 percent in 2011, while emerging and developing economies are forecast to grow at 5.2 percent in 2010 and 5.8 percent in 2011
.

The Fund, however, forecasts a moderately lower growth rate for the 2011-12 fiscal at 7.7 percent.

Studies in the United States have long shown that rich people tend to be healthier than poor people, and that this “health gap” between the haves and have-nots gets worse as people get older. But is that because the U.S. is a capitalist society? Apparently not. A new study from North Carolina State University shows that the same is true in China. However, there is one key difference. In China, the overall health gap across generations is getting narrower – and it’s getting wider in the U.S.

The research, “Social Change and Socioeconomic Disparities in Health over the Life Course in China: A Cohort Analysis,” was published in March by American Sociological Review.

This article examines social stratification in individual health trajectories for multiple...

Social Media and China: It's Not What You Think: Notes from SxSW

Many of the brands I work with are extremely interested in the Chinese market. With a burgeoning economy and a billion people, it's easy to understand why. In fact, one of my clients got back from China just in time to fly to Austin for this conference. Her description of the differences was fascinating.

So if we're going to want to look at social media marketing for the Chinese market, we need to understand social media in China. That's why I attended "Social Media and China: Different than You Think" at SxSW. The panelists included:

Jacqui Zhou from Dell

Benjamin Joffee from Plus Eight Star; and

Sam Flemming from CIC

Social Media Penetration

While the Internet population in China exceeds that of the United States, the initial question was about socia media usage, and whether or not it's popular. And it is. There are 221 million blogs, 117 million BBS and 176 million social network users. While Facebook is blocked, most people use a local Chinese social network, QZone, which was built by Tencent.

Note the Bulletin Board System reference there. While they are called that in China, they are not a throwback to the 1990 BBS systems in the US. You can upload pictures, video and more, in an anonymous forum, and it's among the most popular ways to spend time. And chatter about brands is more likely to take place on BBS than anywhere else. The most popular platforms are listed below, showing clearly that people have multiple accounts as there are only about 400m online users in China:

Tencent (1B+, 485m active)

Qzone (310m)

RenRen 200m (50m mobile)

Kaixin001 (75M)

51.com (160m)

What Do People Do Online?

272 million on instant message, 222 million on online video, 108 million on online shopping (The market leader beat eBay and chased them from the market), 265 million on online gaming and 321 million using online music.

Looking at the social technographics ladder, America has 21% of people who create original content, while China has 40% of people who create content. That's a very significant difference. While the inactives are equal (25% of each population), and people in the US are more likely to join social networks than Chinese (25% to 23%), the large percentage of creators is potentially interesting from a marketing standpoint.

Zhou noted the difference between the stereotype that Asians are less likely than Americans to speak directly and wondered if anonymous BBS systems are popular as a result. Flemming agreed, but noted that it's also a reaction to a media system that isn't fully objective. So the people spread the word themselves through many of these social systems. Virtual currency (at QQ, pictured above) is so popular that it's now taxed by the government. That's a shocking sign of its ubiquity.

What Are they Talking About?

By industry, the chatter varies dramatically. In order of declining popularity, conversations center around

Automobiles (~13m)

Mobile phone (~7m)

Sports (~3m conversations)

Computer

Baby products

Cosmetics

Healthcare

Flemming is finding that these conversations are changing the way people buy cars. His friend went online and asked if anyone wanted to buy the same car as her so they could get a discount. Two weeks later, 55 people went into the same dealership and bought 55 cars together. Needless to say, they got a very good deal by using this "group purchase" concept. Not surprisingly, mentions of "group purchase" in China have grown dramatically over the last two years.

Chatter around the Ford Focus found that more than half of people discussing the car didn't use the official brand name. They instead used a popular nickname for the car. Absent that local knowledge, the conversation tracking system could be set up incorrectly. In fact, a whole new language called Mars language has been created online and many people use them to speak both online and off. (I'd hate to have to build a monitoring system to track a made up language.) These slangs and languages are so pervasive that the university system had to ban the use of net slang in entrance exams.

China Learned from Korea and Japan

Joffe noted that China learned a lot from Korea and Japan. Korea's popuar Cyworld and Japan's Mixi, MobileGameTown and Gree (all of which are listed on the stock exchange and selling virtual goods). The online advertising market is not as valuable in China, so monetization occurs largely through sales of virtual goods. In fact $5 Billion worth of virtual goods were sold online, which is 5 times bigger than the US (down from 25x in 2008).

Tencent made over $1.5B USD (which is roughly 3x what Facebook made). Tencent is third largest internet company in the world, after only Google and Amazon. Most Americans know nothing of it, but their net margin is 40%, which is astounding.

Online Gaming in China

Love Farmville? The first farm game was made in China by a company called 5 minutes. That was inspired by a Japanese game, and then Zynga copied it and brought it to the U.S., but they weren't the first by any means. The original explanation for popularity was "because there are lots of farmers in China." The popularity of Farmville in the US, however, largely debunks that.

Doob.cc has a very popular game in China. It has a virtual goods component, and it looks like a standard rhythym game (think Dance Dance Revolution), but you dance with someone else via the network. The boys buy the girls they meet online virtual gifts, just as you would buy a drink in the bar. Suddenly the game is extending social life and even dating online.

The 5 Cs of Chinese Innovation

Copy: We always start with something.

Combination: By combining two things (i.e., instant messaging and virtual goods), you can get a great idea.

Competition: As soon as there are two strong video sites, for example, they need to compete and differentiate, which leads to innovation.

Constraints: Because you can't do everything, the constraints foster innovation, even knew business models (because online advertising isn't workable, for example).

China: It has to work for China, and the unique settings of the country, which might be different than for example a Japanese consumer.

Fewer Credit Cards

With much less popularity of credit cards, how do you get the payments for virtual currency? QQ began by selling scratch cards in stores. You'd buy it in store, scratch off the code, enter it and have the money deposited into your account. Very clever.

Other Examples

Zhenai is the most popular dating site in China (and the world, with 22 m profiles it's bigger than Match.com). Since they couldn't use teh same model, they have 350 people on staff who call people up to arrange a date. Then they call you back to see how the date was. They then get feedback from the person dating, and give you feedback on how you did on your date. That should, in theory, make you a better dater. They charge ~$450 USD for a six month subscription, which is very expensive given then income levels there. But they are adding a lot of value. Would that work in the United States? Interesting question.

Lihua allows you to order food delivery by IM.

BabyTree is a social network for young parents where you can also buy goods for the child. It's beginning to become profitable. The limitation on number of children you can have also impacts this site, both positively and negatively.

Dianping is a Yelp-like site that has many more reviews than Yelp. It also ranks the many dishes at each restaurant in terms of popularity.

While China is known in the U.S. in part for their rampant piracy (software, fashion, films, etc.), it's clear from the level of participation, and the monetization of that participation, that China's innovation also offers lessons for marketers in the United States and elsewhere.

A new study published in the March 8 edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) shows more than one-third of CO2 emissions related to the consumption of goods and services in developed countries are actually emitted outside their national borders

For France, Sweden and Britain, more than 30% of consumption-based emissions could be traced to origins abroad; if those emissions were tallied on the other side of the balance sheet, it would add more than four tons of CO2 per person in several European nations.

CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are the primary cause of global warming. Much attention has been focused on the CO2 directly emitted by each country, but relatively little attention has been paid to the amount of...
