Google Adwords Search Funnels

Last week Google released a new report for AdWords accounts and it could encourage you to rethink how you are advertising on the Web.

The AdWords Search Funnels reports provide advertisers with some very valuable insights into what advertisements consumers see during the process of shopping or product research. The reports are currently in beta, but will help paid search marketers gather key information about what AdWords ads are contributing to a conversion and which "upper-funnel" keywords are assisting conversions.

Up to this point, conversions were attributed to the last click of an end-user. The problem is that advertisers don't know how much time passed since the first time that customer/client clicked your ad or how many other ads were seen. The Search Funnels report will show how keywords and campaigns work together to get conversions and the sequence of ad clicks and impressions. The data is generated from users conversion path.

Over the next few weeks, the Search Funnels beta will be rolled out gradually to all accounts in the 'Conversions' section under the 'Reporting' tab. To activate them, you must either have AdWords Conversion Tracking running or import goals or transactions into AdWords from Google Analytics. Also keep in mind that Search Funnel data is limited to search ads showing on Google.com, for ad impressions and clicks within 30 days of the conversion.

Just a few days ago, Google made good (to the surprise of many) on an announcement that they were 'shutting down China'.

Many were skeptical that the search giant would actually turn off one of the fastest growing markets in the world. Others cheered, as the move, spearheaded by none other than Google's co-founder Sergey Brin, became reality.

Google's reasoning was censorship of the search engine's results but also came just a few weeks after some significant hacking of US companies (including Google) from what many believe came directly from Google's China headquarters in Beijing.

In the US, members of Congress applauded the move. In China, reaction was mixed with some taking the Google 'side' and wanting an open Internet, while others were angry that the US-based company would target their country.

Google redirected traffic earlier this week from Google.cn to Google.hk (Hong Kong) with mixed results, as the 'mainland' began blocking various Google services.

Hong Kong was 'given back' to China by the UK in the 1990's and is a Chinese territory but still enjoys a thriving economy and much more open relations and trade with other countries. It was only until about a decade later that portions of mainland China began their direct and aggressive trade programs with the 'outside world'.

In a surprise announcement yesterday, GoDaddy, the largest domain registrar in the world, also said they're pulling out and stopping the registration of .cn domain names. The reason given was a new set of regulations by the Chinese government for registering those domains.

The question now becomes whose next? Will it work?

Will China open up? More importantly ..... Will they float their currency making free trade fair trade?

Regardless, this chapter had to be one of the most fascinating in Internet history.

Google’s search algorithm, The Algorithm, is arguably the single most important computational routine in the world right now. As I outlined in my last post, for many companies The Algorithm literally controls their entire economic destiny and as Google’s traffic and market share grows, so too grows the power of The Algorithm.

Two experimental features were announced in the Google Data Protocol today. Partial response and partial update can reduce the network, memory, and CPU resources needed to work with Google APIs.

What the partial response feature adds is the ability to use the “fields” query parameter to request only relevant information. For example, if you are using the Calendar Data API, you can opt to select only the event title and time. This is a significant boon to performance as the previous API forced applications to request all of the data. Couple “partial response” with the other new experimental feature (partial update) and you will be able to edit data received and use the HTTP PATCH verb to send modified data back to the server.

Starting today, partial response and partial update are supported in four Google APIs included the YouTube Data API, the Calendar Data API, the Picasa Web Albums data API and the read-only Sidewiki Data API. Google will be adding support for most of the APIs very soon.
