Microsoft's MSN portal has been testing a 'new look' on a preview page for the past few months. Comments from those that have checked it out have been somewhat mixed but mostly positive for the new simpler design.

Over the past few weeks, Microsoft has been sending e-mails and also running a banner at the top of the MSN page announcing the upcoming change.

The change is now live for most .... at least here in the US.

One of the things you'll notice immediately is geo-targeting. Even if you are not signed in, the page will deliver news and other results based on your IP (or perceived Internet access location).

The other notable inclusion is a trend chart, not based on Microsoft's Bing xRank, but instead items that have been trending on Twitter:

MSN is also now embracing Facebook Connect directly from the front page. Microsoft is a minority investor in privately-held Facebook.

For now, the new MSN primarily competes with Yahoo and AOL. Both companies launched new layouts as well, also embracing social media, in the past few months.

Microsoft's customizable portal, Live.com recently shut down and offers a page that redirects to the company's search product Bing.

The question that nobody seems to be asking (maybe there's no answer yet?) is what is Microsoft going to do with one of the best web addresses they own .... Start.com ?

Update 1 - Mar 22 - 12:21 AM ET: The new MSN page is apparently also now the default in Canada.
Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series not shipping with copy and paste, may be a future update

It's taken Apple since the iPhone originally came out to recognize the user demand for something as simple as copy-and-paste functionality, yet Microsoft looked like it was about to repeat the same error. News broke yesterday that the next version of the company's mobile OS, Windows Phone 7 Series, would not include the ability to copy and paste, despite previous incarnations of Windows Mobile being able to. Now it looks like the missing function will be an upgrade in future Windows Phone 7 releases.

If we're to believe the latest tipster, the development team behind the software is well aware of the demand for cross-application copy and paste, but including it along with all the code needed to be written and tested for Windows Phone 7 was impossible under their time constraints. Once they finally iron out the last of their bugs and get the operating system ready for release, copy and paste may be able to be considered again as an upgrade for a future software version.

At least it seems clear that the coders know they want to add this, unlike Apple's apparent resistance to the topic, but adding it after the fact could be messy. Will it break existing apps or not work with certain hardware models? Not including it from the start seems to create more problems than anything else. What do you think? Would you prefer to wait another couple months for Windows Phone 7 series if it meant getting copy and paste, or are you glad the team is sticking with their deadline?

Gesture Search speeds up Android file management, Microsoft joins Android app community

This morning Android users have a couple new apps to choose from, including one that adds new search functionality from Google, and an entry from a surprising player on the Android scene.

Gesture Search is a new way to search through your contacts, media, and saved bookmarks, brought to you by Google. The app is all about making searches as quick as humanly possible, for when you've got to whip out your phone and just have your information straight away. You begin spelling your search query, sketching in the letters on the screen, and Gesture Search begins narrowing down the results. If it can't quite tell what letter you meant, it will return results for all possible matches, narrowing them down the more text you enter. A few quick swipes with your finger let you navigate through the list or remove results from it. Users of Android 2.0 or later can try it out starting today.

It might just be the last name you'd think to see developing Android software, but Microsoft has come out with its first app for the OS. Its Tag app recognizes the multicolor triangular 2D barcodes Microsoft has been pushing as a way to embed things like URL data in the real world. You scan one with your Android phone's camera and Tag decodes it and shows you the data embedded within. Just like Gesture Search, it's free and you can download it as of now.
